Review of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) by Peter F — 22 Jul 2011
After several successful flirts with melodrama, Cassavetes made his first attempt at L.A.-based noir and it's quite a treat. His signature close-up shots and subdued style worked well with the paranoid nature of film noir, and it stands as one of his most effective films.
That said, the ending's is sudden and inconclusive which is likely to alienate many viewers, but maybe that's because the story's true outcome would be too obvious to show.
