It probably hasn't aged well, but Cassavetes' films were never easy to watch. In fact, they were never aimed at the conventional 'popcorn and soda' variety of cinema goer, as this subversion of classic film noir conventions will testify.
Alongside 'Faces' and 'A Woman under the Influence', it's amongst his finest work.
