Review of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) by Will J — 07 Nov 2008
Cosmo Vitelli could very well be the most interesting character I have ever encountered in a film, due to both his severe amount of intricacies and his severely realistic depiction of a "man".
This is only a film that Cassavetes could have done, as the sheer amount of truth and realism within the story would have most directors turning this into some abortion of melodrama and gangster film (thank god Brett Ratner never went through with his remake).
This is a film that many will hate, as it is not a film has an easy to find message, it is not fast paced and it is not a good versus evil story (in the typical sense). I for one, find it to be cinematic gold and one of the best character studies ever made (along with A Women Under the Influence and Love Streams, two other Cassavete films).
