Review of The Killing Fields (1984) by Chris M — 02 Sep 2007
Lost the Best Pic Oscar to Amadeus, and never really had a chance. The second half of the film should have been the entire film, but unfortunately we have to sit through a lot of running around before the heroes capture our hearts.
The late Dr. Haing S. Ngor (who wasn't an actor at the time and actually experienced the tragedies in Cambodia), shortly after winning Best Supporting Actor, expressed his disappointment in the lack of evil the Khmer Rouge were conveyed with, and he was right on the money.
Sam Waterston is superb in his pre-"Law & Order" career, but Malkovich disappoints with laziness. It IS POSSIBLE for Malkovich to pull off a well-executed-yet-relaxed performance, but The Killing Fields proves it can get old fast.
