Review of The Killing Fields (1984) by Ibraheem M — 18 Mar 2014
Strictly speaking not a bad movie ,but definitely not the masterpiece its held up to be. The Killing Fields is a bloated epic about the Cambodian civil war that doesn't hold a candle to the better movies in its genre.
We get allot of heavy handed moral rhetoric about Vietnam and Cambodia that we've heard a million times before and sentimental moments between the characters that feel underwhelming because we never actually get to learn anything about their personalities or why their friendships are so enduring in the first place.
Apart from a few fragments of the movie that have a mesmerising moment or two, The movie is far too over-long and generic to leave any lasting impression. If I wanted to go see a good movie about Vietnam or Cambodia, I'd much rather be watching The Deer Hunter or Full Metal Jacket.
