Review of The Karate Kid Part II (1986) by Tero H — 22 Oct 2012
This film, often said to be worse than its prequel, is in my opinion better. It does not have quite enough action or other typical movie elements to make it a classic. Acting, sets, story and ideas are all in order.
Again Daniel gets bullied, but far less than before, it takes place in Japan. Also mr. Miyagi gets bullied, when he has to face an old friend turned enemy. Story is far too easy to guess, and there is far too little karate.
Even so, the movie is humane and a suitable continuation to the first, with nice (although simple) story, a little action and a little bit of sentimentality without getting melodramatic (which happens too often in asian martial arts-related movies).
Certainly watchable, but one thing caught my attention in the film. Daniel does not really look like he has practiced karate that much. His moves look uncertain, and often (same with first movie) I thought that "that move would not have worked in that situation".
Anyway, its a nice film, but recommended to watch together with the first one. This film isn't a lot to look at if one has not seen the first movie before it. If watched by itself and not having seen the first movie, then its 2 stars because it loses its sense of continuity and character depth.
