Review of The Karate Kid (2010) by April C — 11 Dec 2011
The Karate Kid (2010) was a pretty fun and endearing movie. Anytime a remake comes out, it is going to be compared to the original, and this movie had huge shoes to fill. I did my best to consciously view this movie as it's own film and not as just think about how it is better or worse than the original.
From that standpoint, I think it was a really good movie. The characters had some strong-development and depth, the story moved along well, and the scenery was very nice. I also think that the actors did a fine job here, especially Chan.
Now to make a few comparisons to the original. I think that the fighting in this movie surpassed the original. I'm not familiar with the Chinese actors here but I'm guessing they had martial arts training before this movie which helped it in this area.
Both stories are quite similar and I feel that the original gets the edge here if, for no other reason, I think it works better with an older main character. Lastly, this remake PALES in comparison to the original in terms of soundtrack.
They don't even compete in my mind.
