Review of The Iron Lady (2011) by Bryan O — 20 Sep 2012
At the end of this movie I was asking myself what was it actually about. It was disjoint and spread too thin, dealing with the complex situations and issues of Thatchers career too lightly, lacking the detail and background required.
The "Iron' Lady" was mostly portrayed as a doe eyed pitiful thing which may have been used to contrast her more powerful times but the 'Iron' moments in the movie are not definitive enough to complete the contrast for the audience.
On the other hand the film was an accurate and moving portrayal of the difficulty of elderly mental health issues and the lonely path for those who have been widowed. Streep and Broadbent are excellent with Streep showing her mastery by playing several roles in one character.
The subject matter was dealt with excellently but the medium chosen to express it was far too big and got in the way of a tragic and moving situation.
