Review of The Iron Lady (2011) by Alexandra H — 15 Jan 2014
Meryl Streep is soooo watchable in this movie. She gives such heart to Lady Thatcher that I wondered as I watched it if Lady Thatcher projected that much warmth in real life. I loved the relationship between Lady Thatcher and her husband.
While she apparently suffered from dementia, meaning loss of memory, the film doesn't depict that. Instead it depicts Denis, her deceased husband as a ghost who fades into the White Light when Lady Thatcher finally is ready to bid him farewell.
I was surprised that reviewers seem to feel it unfair to depict Lady Thatcher as so debilitated -- she doesn't seem so at all in the movie, rather simply taking comfort and enjoying the ghost of her husband.
Lady Thatcher is depicted throughout her political life as an incredibly strong leader who did what she thought best for England and, in fact, returned England to economic growth. This is an enjoyable movie and very admiring of Lady Thatcher.
