Review of The Intouchables (2011) by Wayne K — 04 Oct 2015
To tackle a subject like disability takes a certain approach, and like many contentious issues, The Untouchables uses light-hearted, often-self-deprecating humour to do so. I never found it to be insulting, condescending or even overly schmaltzy.
The movie doesn't lean on the disability factor to get its laughs, it utilizes the lead characters differing personalities and their outlooks on life, and often with hilarious results. Most of the jokes hit their mark, and many result in genuinely laugh-out-loud moments.
The subject matter might not be to everyone's taste, and it does sway a little too forcibly from funny to serious, but if you want to laugh, you will, and if you want to be moved, I think you'll manage that too.
