Review of The Intern (2010) by Lenny R — 05 Sep 2016
De Niro and Hathaway - together at last!
Did not expect to like this as much as I did. Goofy, broad comedy mixed with heavy personal drama, with some reasonably interesting things to say about gender roles and the role of the elderly in modern society. But it's really the two heavyweight leads who make it so watchable. Sure, De Niro's golden age is behind him, but the depth and nuance he brings to kindly old gent Ben (played with subtlety, as this is obviously a less showy role than the Bickles and LaMottas) show that he still very much has the chops - he makes the role his own to the point that it's impossible to imagine another actor playing it. The Way is typically riveting, switching between the light and heavy with her usual skill. The movie has kind of a sitcom premise, but manages to rise above it to be a surprisingly affecting platon-com (patent pending).
