Review of The Insider (1999) by Prateek M — 13 Apr 2010
A gritty, unswerving thriller which although is a little prosaic in the presentation of its core aspects yet manages to stir up a sullen ambiance with a contrastingly consistent resilient feel suitably reflecting the dire emotional, financial and political consequences of a conscientious decision on an honest individual made to handle extraordinary pressure for an exigent cause.
Russell Crowe commendably immerses himself under the skin of the character giving a riveting performance, assimilating with crafty panache the capricious, dithering state of affairs in the characterâ??s life while he scrutinizes the implications of his polemic move, ensuing into quiescence.
Al Pacino constitutes the other potent force conflating in a versatile performance, unfettered, natural and spontaneous emotions to effectively bring out the intricate qualities of his wise, intrepid character.
The denouement of a series of exacerbating events like the initiation of smear campaign, the insinuating fear tactics of impunity, the tortuous interference for an apocryphal confidentiality agreement are encapsulated remarkably with élan by a maverick auteur, creating absorbing cinema.
