3: It definitely works, but I greatly prefer Ti West's previous horror picture, the masterful The House of the Devil. This is a eerie and atmospheric picture in the best sense. There are virtually no loud noises/fast edits that make one jump, despite there being nothing to fear.
Much in the filming and the soundtrack actually reminded me of The Shining. Even the setting could fit in the same category. However, The Shining is epic in just about every sense, while this is tightly contained.
I'm definitely still looking forward to whatever Ti West does in the future though.
