Review of The Innkeepers (2011) by Rai C — 09 Jun 2012
Now here's a movie that I was wary of when I first watched it. I saw the audience reactions on various sites like here and IMDB and wasn't sure if it would be any good. After watching I can now conclude this must be one of the most underrated horror movies out there nowadays.
The kind of movie you're friend will declare awful because its "boring". I was never bored during this movie. Maybe I'm in the minority of horror junkies my own age, but I still enjoy horror movies that have "character development" and "tension" and actual "suspense".
All of the complaints about the movie say how slowly paced this movie is. They wanted scares every ten minutes. I never found this movie slow or dull, it felt perfectly paced to me. It felt like an actual story to me, instead of just a series of jump-scares.
Most modern focus on finding new and gory ways to kill characters and that is what I find really boring. I think Ti West is really going break through at some point, but if nothing else he is quickly becoming one of my favorite modern horror directors and I'm eagerly awaiting future films from him.
