Review of The Incident (1967) by Connie C — 14 Nov 2011
The Incident has always bothered me, and not in a good way. I mean, it's not a representational film, it's not realistic in the least, it's a caricature of various stereotypes, not particularly well-composed but more pushed into your face to elicit an uncomfortable response from the audience.
To me, The Incident could've been written and directed by a teenager who has no life experience, but who is going to pretend he does, and diligently, for the duration of this labored abuse-fest. Yeah, perhaps this inexperienced child-director can convince you that the black man was a vehement racist whose hate-filled spirit was inexplicably broken by 5 minutes of taunting from an Italian punk? The rest of the characters and the way they interact are just as improbable.
What makes me all the more uncomfortable with The Incident is the fact that the cast is pure gold, and a competent director could have taken them and this film from hokey to hot with just a little effort.
As it stands, The Incident comes across as a well-rehearsed and well-intentioned high school play.
