Review of The Impossible (2012) by Zachariah C — 23 Aug 2015
Alright, I just watched a first hand experience of one of my greatest fears, and it was very painful. I know that drowning is only a small possibility in my life, but I also know that when that water takes control, there is nothing that I can do to stop it. Soooooo, there were some very painful scenes for me to watch. Let's get to it.
This movie was very moving, and it definitely lived up to its name. There is no way in hell that some of the happenstance of this could ever happen, but I digress. I am under the impression that it is based on a true story...(looks it up)...yes, it happened. Ok then, I am sure that the reuniting was less circumstantial? Just too many things that made the planets align too many times. That is my only real complaint.
The very human element in all of this got some tears to rear their ugly head. I am sure it would hit most people the same way. Something about...spoiler territory, I will stop that thought.
Ewan McGregor was very good. The phone call he has to make was all to realistic. I could see myself really doing all of that. Naomi Watts was great and a strong lead for this. I noticed she was nominated for an Oscar in this role. Rightfully so. And Finally the three boys were also very well played. Our new Spiderman being one. Great to see what he was up to before he became Peter Parker.
The special effects for this movie were fantastic. At no point does this seem unrealistic, hence my own lack of comfort when people are being dragged through the water. This particular tsunami makes me wonder how countries that seem to be bombarded by such a disaster get by (I guess with a little help from friends).
This really was a great movie, a little predictable here and there, but a great movie. Bring the tissues if you have a soul. :-) Also, this movie was a box office success making $180.2 million on a $45 million budget. Why do movies like Fantastic 4 need $160 again? This looked legit from start to finish. My last little qualm with the movie actually lies with how it has been labeled by genre. Drama: Yes. Thriller: I dunno about that. Action/Adventure: No. Surely there is a better genre? How about, Natural Disaster/Drama? Or some kind of Biopic? Any way, this movie is really worth the watch. Check it out.
