Review of The Immigrant (2013) by Dawdlingpoet — 25 Nov 2021
I thought this was quite an atmospheric film, with a somewhat chilling performance from Joaquin Phoenix as Bruno. Its quite a gritty film. I found myself feeling quite sorry for the main character and I admired her ability to try to defend herself. Its a film about trickery, manipulation and exploitation of desperation, hence it being a somewhat sobering watch, certainly in part.
I liked the setting - NYC in the early 1900s. I also enjoyed seeing the coreographed theatre sequences and the music played (piano et al.). There is one particularly tense scene. This is quite a good drama film that I'd recommend to others.
