Review of The Immigrant (2013) by Samuel R — 12 Apr 2016
The movie is consistent with the unique style of James Gray. A film that feels timeless. Cotillard captures and emanates such a powerful will to survive while carrying the burden of such hopelessness. Joaquin Phoenix surprises no one with his mastered performance of a character riddled with self-conflict.
But the true mark of this film isn't the setting or even the visuals but the progression. It stays true to the era that it represents and the prison that freedom can be.
