The Immigrant is like nothing else I have seen in contemporary cinema. It is so far removed from the Hollywood status quo that while watching it, you feel like you are in a different era.

This film has a look and feel that harkens back to classical American auteurs like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. It is so subtle that it can be mistaken for minor, but James Gray's masterful control of the tone and pacing is electric. It is a grand, expressive drama that develops in such a Dostoevskian manner that one might think this is an adaptation of one of his great novels.

With a wonderful vision - the scale of the incredibly realized 1920s New York is flawlessly executed and haunting - Gray delivers an American masterpiece that is understated and at the same time a towering achievement.
