Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Reymundo W — 13 Feb 2011
I have been waiting a while for Sylvain Chomet to put out a new traditional-animation movie. I loved "The Triplets of Belleville" and was eager for more. 'The Illusionist' isn't what I thought it would be: the film's story is a distinct metaphor for "that person in your life that's there to give you a hand up and then you don't hear from them ever again" and is quite sad in parts.
The stylized animation, though, keeps your eyes begging for more, to see where these characters' paths will go. As the credits roll, you might feel a bit bereaved, but bittersweet is almost always better than a 'perfect ending'.
Life isn't perfect, and even though it's animation, 'The Illusionist' teaches us, through caricatured eyeglasses, more than most live-action movies out there in the market today ever will.
..and that...is a compliment in and off itself.
