Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Keith E — 18 Feb 2011
The Illusionist (2010). The Illusionist was directed by the director who gave us the masterpiece animated movie the Triplets of Belleville (2003) and is based on a script by Jacques Tati, written shortly before he died.
Mr. Bean's Holiday main character bears a resemblance to Tati. Well this movie is a wonderful animated tribute to yesteryear and the people who perform on stage. The story his about an aging, hard working magician, who goes from town to town looking for work and getting just enough stage work.
He becomes friends with a young woman and takes her on his trips. She is an admirer, but only in a friendly way, and his friendship towards her is one of deep respect. This is a gentleman struggling to live and perform.
The animation is wonderfully drawn. The movie is subtitled and contains many very long and beautiful sequences with no audible dialogue.
