Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Jj M — 18 Mar 2011
A magical little animated gem. If only just to marvel at the brillance of hand-drawn animated features as opposed to the OTT 3D graphics deployed widespread in films nowadays, this is a must-see. And although it's story is laboured and silly here and there, it is nothing short on imagination and creativity.
There is very little dialogue but there is a wonderful subtle touch in applying snippets of French, English and Scot's Gaelic dialogue when there is cause for it. I have to say I enjoyed The Belleville Triplets (by Chomet too) more than this mainly because the story developed better but that is not to take away from a charming film that earned its worldwide release in the midst of hysterically hyped-up and ultimately mediocre 3D releases.
