Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Adrienne R — 04 Jul 2011
I guess maybe I shouldn't have been expecting the Disney magic that I was when I decided to rent The Illusionist. Having been scarred by The Triplets of Belleville as a twelve-year-old, I was hoping that now I'd have the mindset to accept this more intense animation.
However apparently I am not, for I found the ending very depressing and the progression sluggish. The art is beautiful. There is a lot of attention to detail, to the different types of people all around us and the little interactions between humans that so often go unnoticed.
As for the story, however, I was disappointed. This movie is more suited for the artsy folk, not those looking for an uplifting tale about a magician and a plucky young girl from the countryside.
