Review of The Ice Storm (1997) by Vincent B — 18 Dec 2010
Others who have reviewed this film here have said they were curiously unmoved by this film and I understand this because when I first saw it in the cinema I had an identical reaction. Nothing.
However, when another group of friends wanted to see the film I agreed to go, though at the time I didn't know why. My reaction this time (and with all subsequent viewings) was a polar opposite. Everything about this film and it's characters is communicated through subtleties. It's in the emotions on their faces - not just in the words they speak. I encourage the unmoved to watch this again, keeping that in mind. You might appreciate this film enormously once you're able to go into it's depths....
In addition, no other film is able to convey the "feeling" of it's era like this one...I grew up in the early 70's in a suburban area of New York City and I'm not sure how, but Ang Lee tapped into that feeling and got it up on the screen perfectly....for that alone this film is amazing.
