If you are looking for an uplifting holiday movie, this is not it. For these people, the 70s were really depressing. Although they engage in some pretty outrageous behavior, they can't break their emotional stuntedness.
The only somewhat likeable character in this whole mess is dead by the end of the movie and only then we can see people come alive.
