The REAL story of this film is the Canadian folks who take in a young man to help him in life...AND they befriend and assist Rubin Carter in his case. DON'T get wrapped up in the issue of 'guilty/innocent'.
Get wrapped up in the reason WHY those folks did what they did. It's beatiful.
