Review of The Hunt (2013) by Josh O — 24 Apr 2013
A truly heartbreaking film that is also so frustrating but the frustration from watching it shows how powerful it is and how fantastic it is too. Unfortunately it's just so hard to watch and it's not meant to to be enjoyable or entertaining but to present an idea and a situation.
Mads Mikkelsen is fantastic and it's unfortunate that he wasn't nominated for an oscar instead of Hugh Jackman but then again not as many people saw this movie so he couldn't get enough votes.
Also the little girl acted really well especially for her age. As powerful as it is it does have scripting problems; the lack of plot makes it less cohesive then it should be and I don't mind plotless movies but this one needed more focus.
Also there just stupid decisions from characters but some had to be made for the movie to be what it is. There is also a significant amount of time where Mikkelsen isn't on screen and because of how fantastic his presence is it suffers when he isn't on screen.
It's filmed wonderfully but isn't showy and I love how European it feels because it could never have been made in the states. It reminded me a lot of Doubt but I found this movie even better. Frustrating because of it's subject matter but wonderfully powerful.
