Review of The Hunt (2013) by David R — 10 May 2013
Thomas Vinterberg makes movies which really keeps you awake to the limit of getting sick, which he did in 1998 with "The Celebration". "The Hunt" is another hard punch, but with rather little physical violence. It's about the 42-year-old man who works at a daycare center for children. A 5-year-old girl accuses him of sexual abuse. He's totally innocent, but not in the eyes of the Danish village, since children don't lie about such things.
It's of course a nightmare for Mads Mikkelsen, who enters the gate of hell and can't get out of it. It' s a Via Dolorosa and the retaliation from the village also goes out over his son. If gossip doesn't kill you physically, it kills your soul.
But this is also a film about male friendship. A possible light or a possible darkness? We don't know, when the film is over.
