Review of The Human Stain (2003) by Matthew F — 18 Jun 2005
Why You Should See This Movie:
This film attempts to be an interesting suspense/drama and does a decent job in some areas. Hopkins and Kidman are above average but not as impressive as they have been in other films. The film starts off well and maintains some momentum, although it gets a bit boring at times.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:.
The weak part of the film is the script. Attempting to tell the current story of the professor simultaneously with the story of his younger days ends up being boring at times and confusing at others. I think if the script had been a bit tighter, the film could have been quite a bit better. Also, if you are offended by nudity and sexual content then you will not be impressed. Between Kidman and Jacinda Barrett bearing all in multiple scenes and Hopkins and Kidman carrying on a bizarre affair, there is plenty to be offended by.
Conclusion:.
The Human Stain is a decent film that not even the star power of Hopkins and Kidman could save from a poor script.
