Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Naische F — 29 Aug 2008
The Coens pay tribute to old classic films before the advent of colour.. Apparently, this was their first forray into something more mainstream and commercial, given their body of artsy work previously.
The look of the movie and the set-designs have the feel of an Tim Burton movie (The Coens oddly did drop the chance to direct 'Batman' back in 1989) from a story written by Sam Raimi ('Spiderman').
Tim Robbins is promoted to the head of a company as a patsy to take the fall for the company's recent misfortunes with Paul Newman as the company's head-executive. There are many familiar faces too from John Mahoney ('Frasier'), Steve Buscemi (who runs a non-alcoholic bar??) and even Anna Nicole Smith (playing an old blonde bombshell).
Jennifer Jason Leigh plays the love interest of Tim Robbins and really overacts the part, with her fast-paced speech of the time, as in Rosalind Russell's performance from the classic 'His Girl Friday' (1940).
A take on corporate America meeting traditional good old American values. There was potential for this an all-time classic, but somehow felt lost in its direction and purpose...
