Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Dylan N — 15 Jul 2010
Far more uneven than I remembered. Even if you look past the incongruity of making a 30s style screwball comedy set in the late 50s, the tone is all over the place. It's too heavy and almost ghoulish at times, as if the Coens hadn't gotten "Barton Fink" entirely out of their system yet.
All the looming shadows, the leering caricatures that work at the office, even the big clock set piece really weigh down what's essentially not much of a story, and keeps it from being as light as the material otherwise seems to call for.
Leigh is kind of on the border between brilliant and crazy here; I imagine the Coens constantly telling her "Bigger!" in between takes.
