Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Marco M — 17 May 2010

Atmospheric retro horror. Not a Grindhouse pastiche, rather a full on â??Hey I wish it was the 1980s againâ?? cloning of the kind of flick you might have rented on VHS from a newsagent video club back in the day.

Unfortunately, itâ??s so faithful to the decade itâ??s recreating, that in keeping with many productions of that era, itâ??s not actually very good. Whether itâ??s because of a lack of resources or a poor script (or both), precious little happens, and what does is mostly risible.

However, there are flashes of interest and writer / director Ti West is probably worth keeping an eye on in future.
