Review of The House of Mirth (2000) by Danny E — 16 Sep 2008
Terence Davies' adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel is a masterpiece, and one of the best British films in decades. It has a slow, deliberate pace, so immediately will not appeal to everyone. The cinematography is superb, even on a limited budget, and the performances are nuanced and approrpiate for the period of time they are evoking.
Gillian Anderson, in particular, is superb here, and her final scene with Eric Stoltz's Selden is one of the most painful and realistic representations of emotional despair ever put to film.
