Review of The House of Mirth (2000) by Jenn D — 28 Mar 2009
A wonderful film adaption of Edith Wharton's great novel. Watching historical period pieces always makes me appreciate how far women have come in being able to make choices in their lives. Maybe it's tough for modern audiences to connect with Lily Bart's profound inner struggle of survival vs.
following her heart, but for me, it resonates soundly. She never can quite commit herself to marrying for money, but she lives in a society where is she so constrained it seems to be her only valid choice.
Her doomed story is set in stark relief by her ambivalence and fear of having to change her lifestyle for the man she loves. What's truly frightening is the vicious nature of the society she is desperately trying to stay attached to.
