Review of The House of Mirth (2000) by Alexandra S — 25 Jul 2007
This came out in 2000, near the middle of Gillian Anderson's X-Files career. It was odd to see her in a period role after so many years of experiencing her as Scully, but after the first few frames, I was able to drop my limited perception, and allow myself to watch her moving, tragic portrayal of Lily Bart.
Gillian was born for period roles--if this one doesn't prove it to you, also watch her recent turn as Lady Dedlock in the updated version of Bleak House. Anderson's interpretation of Lily's unraveling is rife with truth and vulnerability.
Great supporting performances as well, particularly by Eric Stoltz and Dan Ackroyd. I still need to read the book, but I'd bet this film is a good capturing of it.
