Review of The Hours (2002) by Mark F — 17 Jul 2011
Three woman, in three different time periods and the events that occur over the span of one day in their lives may not sound like an interesting permise, but, be warned. The hours is not just compelling, it is a movie filled with emotional weight unseen in modern cinema.
Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and in particular, Nicole Kidman give blindingly painful performances that will likely go down in history. Although hard to watch in places, The Hours captures your attention and doesn't let go, taking you ever further into the lives of the three women, each living with a painful truth that threatens to overtake them.
Stephen Daldry directs with vigor and care, keeping a good pace but definatly not witholding any drama.
