Review of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) by Mannie L — 14 Aug 2008
One the best of the Rathbone-Bruce collaborations in the Sherlock Holmes series. Generally faithful to the book, the movie is erie and atmospheric, the viewer feels as if they too are trampsing through the moors Devonshire.
Rathbone is at the top of his game as the sleuth, as is Bruce (as Dr Watson) who has to carry much of the early portion of the movie in the absence of Holmes. Lionel Atwill gives a solid (relatively small) performance as Holmes' future nemesis, Dr.
Mortimer, while John Carradine gives a subtle but creepy performance as Barryman (the butler of Baskerville castle/estate). The only way to see this movie is in its UCLA Film School-restored version on DVD, which features a vivid B/W print.
