Review of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) by Nate T — 01 Jan 2017
The first of what would become a 14 film series of Sherlock Holmes starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. This was the first of only two films made in a Fox studios Sherlock Holmes series. The series than changed hands and went to Universal for the remaining 12 films.
Interestingly, this was also the first radio show that they did in their radio series together; The New Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes (1939-1947). Rathbone left the radio show in 1946 but Nigel Bruce stayed another year opposite Tom Conway as Holmes.
The film in question here is rich in atmosphere and period detail. Everyone is in fine form here. This was actually the 4th film version of the most often filmed Holmes work. Rathbone was 47 when this series started with this film.
On Blu-Ray.
