Review of The Horseman (2009) by Alex C — 24 Aug 2010
Has it become some sort of requirement that if you want to do an artistic film about revenge that you need to film it through a colored lens? "The Horseman" is a sorid and bloody affair of screaming, interrogation, and torture.
Within 15 minutes he mutilates 2 men's penis' in creative ways- one with an air pump and the other with fishing wire. (I won't tell you what he does to their balls.) There's nothing premeditated or redemptive at all about the motives of the father as he stumbles through every fight with the ease of a drunken new kidney recipient.
There is an artistic zeal though that you feel in the direction from director Steven Kastrissios, but it seems lost in the violence and blood of this plot that barely holds the film together. I think that's what is most disappointing about "The Horseman", is that underneath the thinly choreographed fight scenes and handy cam there is a tender piece of film still to be discovered.
