Review of Ash Is Purest White (2018) by Alex C — 21 Oct 2018
The basic premise of Ash is Purest White is of a women, Qiaoqiao, waiting years to reunite with her ex-lover (and ex-gangster) Binbin after taking the blame for a crime he committed. What makes up the latter half of the plot is of her waiting and I must admit it is rather boring.
But the first half, which is a portrait of gangster life and the downfall of our characters' lives in it is loads of fun. Setting the political-societal subtexts from the movie aside, it feels Jia made this movie for the pure joy of that first half.
It's almost like that feeling you get when you watch the first 30 minutes of A Clockwork Orange - that Kubrick may have created the whole work just to invest his real energies into that portion.
