Review of The Honeymoon Killers (1970) by Irvin C — 09 Jul 2011
Woah. This was so weird and absurd that it was hilarious to me, the drag-queenish Nurse Ratched type woman Martha hooking up with rhumba dancer Ray. Martha is a cold bitch and Ray is a con man, and her weird neighbor named Bunny shoves Martha into writing him through this olde-tyme lonely hearts pen-pal service.
Even though he cons her, she helps her con her back by pretending she tried to kill herself (hello, abusive behavior!) so he will stay with her. They become partners in scamming lonely women, he promises to marry them and takes their money.
Of course, she gets jealous easy, and things degrade quickly. The black and white photography is great, the story fantastic, the acting decent, and the music very good. A Criterion Collection selection, so you know it's worth it.
