Review of The Homesman (2014) by Ninjaw P — 20 May 2014
The film industry has been good to Tommy Lee Jones and heâ??s certainly returned the favor. His career as an actor is impressive to say the least. With more than two decades of contribution to film behind him, his recent venture into directing is hardly surprising.
Though heâ??s made this divergence thrice before, his addition of The Homesman to the Cannes line-up will easily draw the most attention. Unfortunately, such attention may not be the best thing for Mr.
Jones. His newest film lacks the depth that the story seems to promise. Despite convincing performances throughout, the characters are flat and boring. Furthermore, the filmâ??s exposition, much like the characters, is frail.
At times, the movie is even hard to follow due to the brevity of the initial background story. In the same vein of thought, cause and effect is weak (if present at all). Violence occurs without reason, psychological complexity is left out, and the conclusion leaves audiences wanting.
