Review of The Holy Mountain (1973) by Hana K — 03 Oct 2008
Why isn't this film better known?
The Holy Mountain (1973), directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky is a richly symbolic tale of mysticism, power, greed, control, sexuality, violence, death, rebirth...
Transcendence of all fears and possessions and ultimately, the ego...
"Destroy your illusions - free yourself from the past"...
The film is beautiful, surreal, disturbing, comic in places and utterly unique...
"Rub your clitoris against the mountain!.... Give yourself to the world!"...
Astonishing soundtrack; everything from Tibetan Buddhist monks to Striptease Music to Modern Classical to CosmicJazz...
Weird as fuck, but, contrary to what some people say, entirely comprehensible... (Ok, to understand every bit of symbolism would take detailed knowledge of Kabbalah, Tarot the philosophy of Gurdjieff, Sufism and the I Ching, but extensive esoteric knowledge is not necesary to understand the essence of the film.).
