Review of The Holy Mountain (1973) by Tim S — 24 May 2013
I have a really spotty history with Alejandro Jodorowsky, so forgive me if my opinion of his work is either crude or misses the mark. I am not an incredibly big fan of art films. I'm more of a narrative person, but I do see the point of them and I think I can understand them.
That being said, I think that The Holy Mountain is probably the best that I've seen so far. I remember not liking El Topo all that much (although I saw it a very long time ago). This film is surrealistic and really hits you hard with imagery and ideas.
I found myself captivated for the entire running time. There's never a moment when the film really ends either. It just kind of stops. I only recommend the film to the very open-minded and not people who simply want a story.
This has a bit of a story, somewhat, but its themes, ideas and imagery are much more of what it's all about.
