Review of The Hoax (2006) by Håvard V — 18 Apr 2009
A compelling tale of how a small lie turned into one of histories greatest hoaxes. Richard Gere is brilliantly cast as author Clifford Irving, a down on his luck writer who goes for the story: an authorized biography of Howard Hughes, as told by the infamous billionaire.
Of course, this isn't exactly true, though Irving goes to great lengths to ensure that it comes off as being so. The first half of the film breezes along, mixing comedy and satirical drama in a nearly perfect manner.
It isn't until the second half of the film, as Irving's psyche is tapped into in a muddled manner, that the film comes down a bit. But this tale remains intriguing throughout, and is never anything less than entertaining.
