Review of The Hitcher (1986) by Galen A — 14 Dec 2007
The beautifully photographed desert cinematography accents the bleakness and feelings of isolation perfectly and is probably the thing that helps the film stand out most. Rutger Hauer is absolutely terrifying as psychotic John Ryder.
A serial killing hitchhiker that begins singling out Jim Hallsey after Jim kicks him out of his car. Alot of the things in film happen for no apparent reason as Ryder continues to torment Jim and overcome every obstacle with ease.
This gives the film a dark existential (or is it nihilstic?) vibe as you watch two men in a massive game of cat and mouse without reason and with self-destruction at the end. Slightly underrated, this is not your average slasher flick.
