Review of The Hitcher (1986) by Luc D — 29 Sep 2008
I saw the 2007 Sean Bean remake before I saw this and while I kinda enjoyed the silliness of the former, this is easily the superior film. The primary reason why is that here I was actually rooting for the hero - played very well by C.
Thomas Howell. He has one of those faces that you just like him right away. The fact that he is on his own for the majority of the movie is also a plus. In the remake the victims are a couple to begin with and you never become attached to either in the same way you do with Howell's Jim.
In fact they're so bland that I was in all seriousness rooting for Bean's psycho! Now there's nothing at all wrong with the legendary Rutger Hauer's performance but I'm sure rooting for the good guy was the director's intention! :).
