Review of The Hitch-Hiker (1953) by Douglas P — 28 Jan 2008
The only film noir ever directed by a woman. Ida Lupino strips down to the bare necessities to tell this tale of a lazy-eyed psychopath holding two Average Joes hostage. Contains one of the most haunting images in all of Film Noir - the hitch-hiker has a bum eye that doesn't close, even when he sleeps.
Such a memorable image raises this film out of enjoyable mediocrity into something truly haunting.
