Review of The Hills Run Red (2009) by Frisby 2 — 20 Oct 2011
One word, "Sadistic!".
No, I'm not kidding when I tell you that this movie is nothing but sadism from beginning to end. Gore, nudity, & sadistic violence is what this movie is made of.
Warning, the following review contains some spoilers!
Characters:
Possibly the major flaw in the movie. Despite some of the more intelligent & clever characters, the majority of the characters in this movie were idiots. Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrinck), is a major mess of an idiot. In one scene, he sees that someone was clearly following them in his own camera, but does he suspect their being followed or tells anyone about this? Nope, he just continues forth seeking out his mission. Then there is Lalo (Alex Wyndham), a character who is not only an asshole, but a complete moron as well; he knows something is behind those pitch black bushes, but does he or the chick run? No, he actually dares to go forward a bit into the darkness.
Then we have Serena (Janet Montgomery), a dim witted, & stupid girl who not only has lungs designed to scream for countless minutes, but is also a moron as well, who after she saves her boyfriend Ty, doesn't bother to run away. As for the villains, all I can say is that they're all believable & extremely heartless.
Plot/Story: The story is pretty straight forward, & the plot has some nice twists to it during the movie. However, I do question some of it. It is also rather predictable, but I adored how Lalo brought up the typical horror cliches most slasher horrors use. But, the part where Ty suddenly breaks into a scene of laughter in the end was not only creepy, but also made no sense. However, what I truly adored about this movie's plot is how it is almost original, maybe not the whole slasher & sadistic family thing, but the whole idea of the movie is original.
Cast/Acting: Most of the cast members are either forgettable or no names. But despite that, they gave some extremely good performances, especially Sophia Monk.
Effects: I have to say that despite the abundant gore & blood, a handful of it (mainly the spurting blood) looked cheap & fake. That's pretty much it.
Final summation, it is not an amazing horror slasher flick, but it a definite worth watching popcorn flick. But if you're squeamish or can't stand the sight of blood, avoid this movie like the plague.
