Review of The Hills Have Eyes (1977) by Dan G — 09 Jan 2010
30+ years later, this movie still largely holds up as a watermark in tense, uncomfortable film making that is surprisingly undated (just the two younger non-mutant men's hair, the short-shorts and the picture quality giving it away).
While the remake is largely shot-for-shot in many places and expands on certain areas of the story where only a larger budget could go, the original's stronger focus on the lineage of the mutants that goes unaddressed in the remake is a strength of this original.
The other major strength is the presence of wunderkind horror icon Michael Berryman. The film's sudden ending is still strange and powerful though it loses some punch due to its being anchored in the film's main flaw: the male lead is not a good actor.
